Course Information
This course will introduce you to the management and principles of Digital Rectal Examination and assessment, treatment, and management of faecal incontinence. Attendees will have a chance to observe and practice DRE. Course content will include, Anatomy and Physiology, Functions of the Bowel, Constipation and Faecal Incontinence, Bristol Stool Type, Diet and medication, Red flags, Spinal Cord Injury, Autonomic Dysreflexia, Consent and Documentation
Learning Outcomes
Faecal incontinence and constipation:
- Define the anatomy and physiology of the
bowel.
- Identify clinical indications for
constipation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the different reasons
for constipation
- Show understanding of holistic assessment and
care planning of patients with faecal incontinence.
- Refer to the Bladder and Bowel Manual
- Consent and record keeping.
DRE
Target Audience
Attendance should be discussed and agreed with Line Manager prior to undertaking the course and a named mentor identified to support learning in practice. The course is aimed at Nursing staff who assess for treatment and management of faecal incontinence, including District Nurses, Community Matrons, ICRAS and the ICN (integrated Community Nursing) and all staff who undertake DRE as part of their role including District Nurses, Treatment Rooms staff, ICRAS and Community Matrons ICN- Integrated Community Nursing
