The training draws on existing best practice, and the expertise of autistic people, people with a learning disability, and family carers, as well as subject matter experts. In July the Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a requirement that regulated service providers ensure their staff receive training on learning disability and autism which is appropriate to the person’s role. Day 1 of 4-day program The first day of the palliative and end-of-life care program will explore the differences between palliative and end-of-life care. Discussing how national, regional, and local guidelines can support the care we give to patients and those important to them. An introduction to Communication Skills will identify facilitating behaviours that promote effective communication and blocking behaviours that hinder it. Techniques for breaking bad news and handling difficult conversations will be explored and practiced.
Day 2 of 4-day program Aims of this day will be to discuss the benefits of advance care planning with patients and those important to them. Exploring how to complete, document and share advance care planning decisions within the MDT. Introduction to the teams within the hospice who can support with non-pharmacological methods of symptom management and psychological support. Increase knowledge of signs and symptoms of palliative care emergencies and development of management plans.
Day 3 of 4-day program Aims of this day will be to increase knowledge and skills of assessing and identifying different types of cancer pain. Including the use of tools available to support pain assessment. Management of cancer pain utilising opiates and adjuvant medications will be explored, including conversion of oral medications to a subcutaneous syringe driver. Common antiemetics used to manage nausea and vomiting in palliative care will be discussed, with a focus on how to assess for the different causes of nausea and vomiting. Signs and symptoms of malignant bowel obstruction and constipation will be explored, identifying potential management plans.
Day 4 of 4-day program This day will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to address common physical and psychological symptoms experienced by patients approaching the end of their life. Symptoms include pain, agitation, delirium, nausea, and respiratory secretions. Areas discussed will include how to recognise when patients are deteriorating, converting oral medications to syringe drivers, and common medications/doses used. The role of the specialist palliative care team in the community will be explored, together with how to ensure referrals are appropriate. The importance of Spiritual Care and Bereavement support will be explained. Staff caring for palliative and end-of-life patients face significant emotional challenges within their role. Therefore, we will address how to care for ourselves and each other, exploring how to manage our own stress levels and discover strategies to preserve our own well-being.

The morning of this session will focus on the impact of physical and psychological trauma in our patients, and how this can impact upon their acceptance of care delivery; as well as the vicarious trauma that can be experienced by health care professionals. Early afternoon, there will be a session on the development, maintenance and protection of resilience, and how to recognise when this may be faltering. After lunch, the Organisational Effectiveness team will join the preceptorship team to lead some deeper conversations about working towards becoming Actively Anti Racist, in alignment with the Trust Strategy, and Perfect Care goals of zero acceptance of discrimination.
Split session, with AHPs having a “Pre Educator” workshop in the morning, to support them in advance of them undertaking the university based Educator module, and Nurses having a session on “Assessing Students in Practice” Delivered by Practice Education Facilitator colleagues. An informal Q&A session co-facilitated by the Quality Review Visit (QRV) and Organisational Effectiveness (OE) teams. The session will provide a brief overview of the QRV process and an opportunity to ask questions about the QRV process and the inspection itself.
This training is open to all staff, whether you are new to the organisation or seeking a refresher. The first part of the session covers what constitutes an incident, why incident reporting is essential, and how to use the Radar system to submit an incident. The second part focuses on reviewing, approving, and managing incidents within Radar to support effective oversight and governance.

A 60-minute overview of Neglect and Self Neglect The training session focuses on helping participants recognise signs and symptoms of Neglect/Self Neglect like poor hygiene, malnutrition, unsafe living conditions, and withdrawal, while understanding risk factors such as isolation or cognitive impairment. It also emphasises responding appropriately by following safeguarding principles like empowerment, protection, and accountability, ensuring concerns are recorded accurately and reported through the correct procedures. Overall, the session reinforces that early identification and action are essential, and the importance of making safeguarding personal .
Data from MCFT Safeguarding Duty Hub shows us that disclosures of Non-Recent Sexual Abuse is a consistent area of practice which provokes uncertainty and requests for advice and support from staff across the Trust. To best support our staff we have produced a practical briefing session to improve understanding of the prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse within our communities. We explore the circumstances which lead to abuse being unreported / kept secret, resulting in disclosures of historical abuse in adulthood. The session also builds on the lessons from UK Gov report “I Wanted Them To Notice’ and promotes a trauma informed approach when responding to disclosures from adults of non-recent child sexual abuse
To build on previous learning from level 3 eLearning module and develop increased awareness how safeguarding children applies when working in Adult Mental Health Services The concept of “Think Family” as adults with mental ill health can have children or care and support responsibilities for or contact with children and young people and we know from national and local serious and learning practice reviews that mental ill health in a parent or carer can contribute to a risk of harm for children and young people. It is important to note that practitioners working with older patients are still required to consider the impact of their patient’s health on their families and carers and the impact of their family circumstances on their patients’ health from a safeguarding perspective.
