Course Information
Level 1 Awareness Eating, Drinking and Swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia) Training is offered face to face or as an e-learning package. The training covers:
• The normal swallow,
• What Eating, drinking, swallowing (Dysphagia) is
• Prevalence, at risk groups
• Impacts of Eating, drinking, swallowing (Dysphagia)
• Basic information regarding the physical, emotional and psychological impact of swallowing and feeding difficulties on the individual and carers,
• Basic Information regarding Dysphagia and Choking risk screen and appropriate referral pathways
• Brief Choking prevention
• Basic Dysphagia management and incident reporting

Learning Outcomes
To demonstrate an awareness of the ‘normal swallow’ process
To identify signs or symptoms which indicate potential eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (Dysphagia)
To have an awareness of the impacts of eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties for the individual and their carers.
To be confident with knowing how to support someone with basic safe swallowing guidelines
Demonstrate confidence with how to refer a service user for support should you have concern over their eating, drinking or swallowing.
Refresher
Target Audience
Staff members for which this course will be mandatory for will be:
• Inpatient clinical staff band 3-7
• Community clinical staff band 3-7 (nursing staff and AHPs)
The training course is however available to any staff who feel that this would be beneficial to them.
