Learning Outcomes

· Understand the momentum for positive change in strategies to support people who may present with behaviours of concern and the importance of adopting of a person centred approach.

 
· Understand experiences of people who use services.
 
· Understand and appreciate the negative impact of physical intervention on service users.
 
· Awareness of relevant legislation and guidance.
 
· Understand the principle and functions of restraint reduction theory and Mersey Care’s Restrictive Practice Reduction Programme (No Force First).
 
· Awareness of core skills in building therapeutic relationships.
 
· Understand the idea of positive, recovery focussed language in the relation to the description of behaviours of concern in clinical environments.
 
· Objectively explore staff experiences of aggressive behaviour and the use of physical intervention and how it can be shaped by various experiences and beliefs.
 
· Understand the principles of Positive Behavioural Support.
 
· Show awareness of the assault cycle and the ways in which staff can positively intervene to prevent an escalation towards conflict.
 
· Demonstrate knowledge of the key elements of verbal and non-verbal de-escalation – as well as the key human quality of compassion.
 
· Understand and explore the concept of ‘trauma informed care’ and appreciate the how it can develop a more positive and compassionate view of behaviours of concern.
 
· Understand the concept of ‘reasonable force’ and a wider consideration of reasonableness in relation to the human rights act.
 
· Understand the legal and ethical issues in relation to restraint.
 
· Understand issues in relation to race, gender and cultural issues.
 
· Demonstrate knowledge of the aggression coercion cycle.
 
· Demonstrate knowledge of the boundary seesaw model.
 
· Understand the importance of reporting and escalation.
 
· Demonstrate knowledge of post incident support, review and learning. 
 
· Awareness of CQC regulation 20 on duty of candour of openness, transparency and candour.
 
· Awareness of the signs and symptoms of positional asphyxia and actions to take in such an event.
 
· Awareness of the 5 ways of wellbeing to improve the mental health and wellbeing of staff at work.
 
· Ligature knife awareness / training
 
· Awareness of trust policies SD18 Policy for the Support of Service Users who many present with behaviours of concern  (NB: formally. Policy for the Support of Service Users who many present with challenging behaviours.
 
· Implement the use of approved breakaway techniques by which to engage from grabs and holds.
