Learning Outcomes
  • To be able to plan the care of a patient with a Leg Ulcer.
  • To understand the pathophysiology of leg ulceration,
  • To be able to describe the anatomy and physiology of the vascular system and underlying factors that influence leg and foot ulceration.
  • Describe the characteristics of venous and arterial ulcers
  • Be able to recognise factors that effect wound healing
  • Recognise that leg ulceration is a sign/symptom of an underlying problem that needs to be identified
  • Recognise when a patient with a chronic wound, needs further assessment/Assess patients with ulceration using a systematic approach

  • Describe what Doppler ultrasound is and how it works
  • Perform a Lower Leg assessment including ABPI
  • Implement the findings of ABPI in context with the nursing assessment
  • Describe treatment strategies
  • Describe the effect of compression bandaging on the superficial venous system
  • Utilise compression bandages appropriately
  • Correctly apply a recognised bandage regime
  • Recognise the importance of prevention strategies
  • Demonstrate how to measure and choose the ideal compression hosiery
